right bullet Flexible Credit Policy

Flexible credits are a percentage of a United Way’s membership investment set aside by United Way of America (UWA) as a membership benefit. The purpose of flexible credits is to provide the support and incentive necessary to enable United Way staff and volunteers to access learning and training opportunities in order to strengthen and advance system transformation. This policy is intended to clarify how and for what flexible credits can be used to assist United Ways in their training and development planning.

Flexible credits (also referred to as “flex credits”) are available to United Way professionals and volunteers whose United Way is in full compliance with membership standards and current with dues payments.

Eligible members of the United Way system can use flex credits: (1) to defray costs for travel and for registration fees for training and events offered by UWA, and (2) to cover customary and reasonable consultation and travel expenses for UWA staff or other approved United Way professionals who have been requested by a member United Way to provide customized on-site training. In general, flex credits can not be used to offset expenses and travel associated with volunteer efforts for the system including system committee meetings, adhoc advisory groups and user groups.

right bullet Travel Reimbursement Policy

Airfare to attend a UWA training or event is reimbursed on the basis of round-trip coach fare in excess of $100 (your United Way pays the first $100). The maximum amount you can charge against flexible credits for travel reimbursement is $500. Please choose one mode of transportation for reimbursement: airline, train, rental car, or privately-owned vehicle. Mileage reimbursement applies to the use of privately-owned vehicles only.

Travel reimbursement will be honored only on lowest-fare tickets. If your ticket exceeds $500, the difference between the price of your ticket and the flexible credit reimbursement is your United Way's Responsibility.

right bullet Per Diem Policy

Per diem is the amount of money, per day, that you can charge against your flex credits to offset your housing, meals, and other appropriate travel-related expenses. The dollar amount is determined by adding the cost of the (approved) hotel plus tax with the estimate of meals and other costs, and reflects the local economy of the particular venue. The number of nights allowed for hotel costs and the number of days allowed for meal costs are adjusted according to the length of the training or event in which you are participating, and does include travel time to and from the event. When completing a Travel Reimbursement Form, please note the permitted maximum number of days for reimbursement of hotel and meal costs.
